A blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre—with a bit more Mourvèdre than usual this year—the 2020 La Clape la Falaise is a terrific effort. Notes of strawberries, garrigue and subtle notes of saltbush appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is ripe and supple, laden with raspberries, yet fresh and zesty on the lingering, elegant finish.

Aged in a combination of foudres and 300-liter barrels, the 2018 La Clape la Falaise reveals hints of cracked pepper, mixed berries and licorice on the nose. It's full-bodied and expansive in the mouth, rich and mouthfilling without being heavy or overdone, buttressed by silky tannins and ample depth of fruit. It's a lovely effort that should drink well for 4-5 years.

A solid introduction to the Negly lineup, the 2017 La Clape la Falaise is a full-bodied but admirably focused wine, with robust black cherry and plum flavors complemented by bright acids and a gentle touch of oak. It's 40% Syrah (aged in 300-liter barrels) and the rest equal proportions of Grenache and Mourvèdre (aged in tank). The tannins are ripe and plush, giving this wine a broad, supple feel in the mouth, yet the wine lingers elegantly on the finish.

The 2016 La Clape la Falaise was the only red from that vintage that had been bottled at the time of my February visit. It's a blend of 55% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre that aged a year in foudres. It's a rich, velvety wine filled with black cherry fruit that verges on surmaturité. Creamy, supple and long, but not as concentrated or intense as the other bottlings, I'd opt for drinking this fruit-bomb within its first decade. It's a good introduction to the house style.
