The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes exhibits aromas of cherries, cassis, dark berries and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated, this is fine-grained but firmly tannic, and it will need a bit of bottle age.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes has a mixture of red and black fruit on the crisp, tensile nose, crushed rose petals just underneath. I admire the strictness of these Pommard-like aromas. The palate is soft and pure on the entry with red plum and cranberry fruit, very fine tannin and an almost caressing, silky smooth finish that is a delight. Excellent.

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes has a perfumed, floral, expressive bouquet with red cherries, wild strawberry and briary - more backward compared to the red Chassagnes from the domaine. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle tannin, quite masculine and Pommard-like towards the finish that just needs to develop a little more substance. There is still fine potential here.

The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes has a delightful nose in the making with flora, red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, aromas that are disarmingly pure and dare I say, very "Michel Lafarge" in style. There is plenty of salinity here, fine structure that lends it a Pommard-like finish. This well crafted, stylish Volnay has great potential once in bottle.

The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes has a more introspective bouquet compared to others that I have tasted: strawberry pastilles and a smear of maraschino eventually emerging. The palate is medium-bodied and quite succulent on the mouth, belying the structure that only surfaces toward the finish. This is a somehow conservative Volnay, but one that is very well proportioned and should drink well for the next decade.
