The 2001 Cuvee Cesare exhibits the most barrel influence of any of these wines. While structured, closed, and impenetrable, it possesses huge depth, obvious sweet blackberry and cassis fruit, and a monolithic personality. It's hard to know which way this effort will go, but I wouldn't bet against any wines coming from this estate. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2014.
As evidenced by these tasting notes as well as those from the 2000s and 1999s, this is an extraordinary offering, bottled without fining or filtration. It is among the most exciting wines being produced from any of the Cotes du Rhone appellations.
This estate, located in the village of Travaillan, and run by perfectionist Daniel Boulle, has quickly emerged as one of the most serious Cotes du Rhone producers. This offering is an ageworthy, super-concentrated example of what can be accomplished by a passionate, highly committed producer.
