A blend of equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, the 2012 Cotes du Rhone Village Cuvee 3 Cepages also shows the purity and suppleness of the vintage, with ample floral, berry, mint and incense-like qualities flowing to a medium to full-bodied, textured and beautifully balanced feel on the palate. Coming from tiny, tiny yields (we’re talking on the order of 10 hectoliters per hectare), it is a stunning success in the vintage and should evolve gracefully for 7-8 years.
One of the leading southern Rhone estates for value is the Domaine Les Aphillanthes, which is run by Helene and Daniel Boulle. While no 2011s were presented, their 2012s look to be superb across the board.
