Tasted from concrete, where it's been maturing since the beginning, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Villages Cuvee Trois Cepages is equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre from the commune of Ste. Cécile les Vignes. This is lovely stuff—dark, rich, earthy and savory—supple upfront but adding dusty tannins on the long finish. It should drink well for close to a decade.

The 2015 C?tes du Rh?ne Villages Cuvee Trois Cepages (equal parts Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre) is another terrific wine that’s loaded with potential. Blueberries, blackcurrants, Provencal garrigue and licorice all emerge from this full-bodied, mouth-filling, plump and decadent beauty that should drink nicely for 7-8 years.

The 2014 C?tes du Rh?ne Villages Cuvee Trois Cepages is an even split of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah that’s raised completely in concrete tanks, with no wood whatsoever. Provencal, elegant, beautifully pure and with pretty notes of crushed flowers, violets, black raspberries and raspberries, it’s not a heavyweight, yet shines for its purity and drinkability. It should be ready to go right from the start.

A blend of equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, the 2012 Cotes du Rhone Village Cuvee 3 Cepages also shows the purity and suppleness of the vintage, with ample floral, berry, mint and incense-like qualities flowing to a medium to full-bodied, textured and beautifully balanced feel on the palate. Coming from tiny, tiny yields (we’re talking on the order of 10 hectoliters per hectare), it is a stunning success in the vintage and should evolve gracefully for 7-8 years. One of the leading southern Rhone estates for value is the Domaine Les Aphillanthes, which is run by Helene and Daniel Boulle. The outstanding 2011 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Trois Cepages, from a biodynamically farmed vineyard, is fashioned from equal parts Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah, and is bottled unfiltered with no exposure to oak whatsoever. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by abundant aromas of blueberry, black raspberry and cherry fruit intermixed with a notion of lavender. Medium to full-bodied with loads of fruit as well as soft tannins, it possesses the charm and fruit-forwardness that makes the finest 2011s appealing. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. Along with Peter Weygandt, I coincidentally discovered this fine estate with the release of their 1999s. Proprietor Daniel Boulle has done brilliant work over the last decade plus, and now works with the talented Philippe Cambie as his oenologist.
