The young unoaked red 2016 Viernes had aromas of red licorice and wild berries with a herbal twist. The palate was medium-bodied with fine tannins and noticeable acidity that made me salivate. One for food. Drink young. 60,000 bottles produced.

The young, unoaked Mencía 2014 Viernes was bottled after four months in contact with the lees. There are some reductive aromas that benefit from contact with air. It develops some curious notes akin to toast, the fruit is black rather than red, and there are also some aromas of licorice. The palate is soft and round, with moderate acidity. Pleasant. 45,000 bottles produced.

Moving to the reds, the 2013 Viernes is the young vine Mencía cuvée which is bottled un-oaked after four months in contact with the fine lees. It seems like a simple, honest, fruit-driven young red with notes of red fruit and licorice, quite pleasant and easy to drink. Good for what it is. 60,000 bottles produced.

The 2012 Viernes – viernes means Friday in Spanish, is pure Mencia from different vineyards, it is very powerful, with strong aromas. Elegant and round, it fills your mouth with clean flavors of violets and a remarkable finish. It is produced in enough quantities (around 100,000 bottles) to make it easy to find and sold at a price that is good value as a young Mencia introduction. Drink 2013-2015. Godelia is a very recent winery, created in 2009 by the Garcia Rodriguez family. They own 35 hectares of vineyards, in different locations with varying altitudes and orientations. They work with white Godello and red Mencia, 30 hectares of them on trellises and the rest are head-pruned old vines. The winery has 36 stainless-steel tanks of different sizes and 250 oak barrels.
