The 2003 Gran Reserva spent 24 months in French and American oak. Deep purple in color, its bouquet reveals a slightly roasted character (2003 was a record hot vintage), abundant black fruits, and some earthy minerality. On the palate it reveals some elegance and a smooth texture but is in need of greater depth and volume. This savory offering can be approached now and will last for another 8-10 years. The Gran Reservas spent 18 months in French oak, some new, followed by 18 months in seasoned American oak. The 2001 Gran Reserva is purple-colored with more primary aromatics including elements of wood smoke, Asian spices, pencil lead, and blackberry. There is enough structure to permit several more years of evolution, excellent depth and breadth of fruit, and a long finish. Give this tasty effort 2-3 years in the cellar and drink it through 2020.
