The Hilberg Pasquero 2015 Barbera d'Alba Superiore (an organic and biodynamic wine) opens to a darkly saturated color and black fruit aromas with dried blackberry and plum. To the palate, the wine is richly textured and fleshed out, owing much of that openness to the hot and dry 2015 vintage.

The 2010 Barbera d’Alba Superiore comes alive in the glass with layers of vivid fruit. Aging in French oak gives the wine volume, creaminess and attractive layers of spiciness, all of which work beautifully. A rich, textured finish rounds out this expansive, generous Barbera. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. Hilberg-Pasquero can be counted on to deliver rich, flavorful wines loaded with personality. The small, tiny estate continues to be a beacon for quality in the Roero. The 2009 Barbera d'Alba Superiore is another gorgeous wine from Hilberg Pasquero. It flows with gorgeous depth and muscle. This is a decidedly richer, jammier style with more oak influence than the estate's regular bottling, which I like nearly as much. In 2009 the Superiore boasts superb balance and tons of class. Smoke, tar and French oak are nicely layered into the vivid finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016. I have tasted the Hilberg-Pasquero wines for years. Still, I was completely blown away by this lineup. These are some of the most pure, unadulterated wines readers will come across. I can't possibly recommend the wines highly enough. The 2008 Barbera d’Alba Superiore is the product of a challenging harvest. In this vintage the smokiness and charred qualities of the French oak overwhelm the mid-weight depth of the fruit. With time in the glass, the excess oakiness recedes a touch, revealing what might have been had the weather been cooperative. Even in a tough year the quality and sheer purity of the fruit at Hilberg-Pasquero is remarkable. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013. Hilberg-Pasquero is one of my favorite wineries in Roero. The wines are made with a natural, non-interventionalist approach in both the vineyards and cellar. As a result, there can be some variation in quality from vintage to vintage, but at their best these are some of the most unique reds readers will come across. The 2007 Barbera d’Alba Superiore is an utterly joyous wine bursting with well-articulated aromatics and flavors. Despite its considerable richness and concentration, the wine reveals lovely detail and nuance, not to mention tons of balance. Sweet scents of tar, smoke, licorice and French oak linger on the finessed finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. The small Roero estate of Annette Hilberg and Michele Pasquero is one of my favorite sources for pure, hand-crafted wines that highlight the unique qualities of this terroir.
