Medium garnet colored, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Precious opens on the nose with redcurrant jelly, cassis and earth with hints of cigar box and Marmite plus a waft of crushed rocks. The palate is full-bodied, firm and rock solid with earthy layers and a mineral-tinged finish.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Precious has a medium garnet color and simply sings of crushed blackberries, warm black raspberries, earth, tobacco and forest floor with wafts of stewed tea. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated and earthy with tons of fruit and fantastic length.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Precious is one of the most powerful wines I tasted with Jayson Woodbridge. Today it is impossibly young, yet all of the necessary qualities are there for this to be a fabulous wine once it is bottled. Waves of dark cherries, plums, flowers and tobacco mark the deep, multidimensional finish. This is a fabulous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. Woodbridge’s vineyards are in St. Helena (Kayli Morgan), the lower part of Howell Mountain (Ark) and Calistoga (Few and Far Between). Woodbridge is less reliant on outside consultants than many of his colleagues, so the wines bear very specific signatures that are unlike those of other wines being made in the Valley. The late harvests give the wines super-ripe fruit that can at times veer towards sweetness, but it is the extreme silkiness and finesse of the tannins that differentiates these wines. Woodbridge believes wines must be ready to go upon release and frowns upon decanting or advance aeration, which he doesn’t think should be necessary. As outstanding as these wines can be upon release, the reality is that the wines have also proven to age exceptionally well. I tasted a huge number of wines with Woodbridge and his team, but it was two wines with some bottle age (the 2000 and 2006 Kayli Morgan) that made the deepest impression. I hope Hundred Acre fans can find the discipline to put away a few bottles. The transformation of these wines in bottle is remarkable.
