Kistler's 1988 Cabernet Sauvignon should turn out to be one of the best wines from this average quality vintage. Unfortunately, just over 100 cases were made, so availability is a problem. The opaque dark ruby/purple color and the big nose of cloves, spices, vanillin and cassis are followed by a rich, full-bodied, surprisingly concentrated wine. There are also soft tannins, good acidity, and a long finish. Drinkable now, this wine should easily evolve for another 10-15 years. Kistler continues to go from one strength to another.
