This vintage seemed to produce exactly what the team at Cellier des Princes needed, and the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Heredita—crafted with the advice of consultant Philippe Cambie—boasts lovely floral aromas backed by layers of ripe black cherries. A blend of 90% Grenache, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah, it's full-bodied, silky and expansive without excess weight, a real beauty. Yes, it's on the ripe, almost plum and chocolate side of things, but it retains a sense of weightlessness and terrific length that's hard to top.

Philippe Cambie consults on this wine, which is almost all Grenache, aged in demi-muids. Cedar, vanilla, and baking spices are backed by black cherries in this full-bodied, plush, velvety wine. Does the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Heredita lack a bit of terroir-driven character? Perhaps, but it sure does taste good.

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Heredita from the large cooperative won't be bottled until approximately February 2019. It's 95% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre from the sandy soils of Les Bédines, currently aging in demi-muids. It's toasty, with restrained fruit and hints of menthol, features ample weight and richness but ends on a dry, astringent note. Let's see how it turns out once its élevage is complete.
