The 2007 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana is quite a bit darker and firmer than the more approachable Feudi d Mezzo. Vibrant red cherries, minerals, flowers, licorice and spices are some of the notes that emerge from this tense, focused wine. The Calderara Sottana continues to develop beautifully in the glass as scents of licorice, tobacco and earthiness add further complexity. This bottling might merit a higher score in the future if the tannins soften. Today the wine is beautiful for its structure and inner perfume. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. Importer and winemaker Marc de Grazia makes these wines. A portion of the profits go to Florence's Meyer Pediatric Hospital.
