This estate requires further investigation, as I was immensely impressed by the old style, rich, concentrated, backward Chateauneuf du Pape that proprietor Pierre Alacay in the 1990 vintage. Among all the 1990 Chateauneuf du Papes, this is clearly the most unformed and unevolved. The color is an impressive saturated dark ruby/purple, and the tight nose offers black-cherry, earthy, roasted meat scents. In the mouth, there is fine body, gobs of tannin and glycerin, and a long, fleshy, powerful finish. Five to six years of cellaring appears warranted for this big wine; it should keep for 15 or more years. Innovative importers might want to take a look at the Domaine de la Souco-Papale.
