The 2017 Syrah Garys' Vineyard is very deep, opaque purple-black in color. It has a nose of smoked meats, violets, lilacs and menthol with very ripe, dense black and blue fruit preserves plus chocolaty hints. Full-bodied and dense, it packs in the dark fruits with lovely floral and chocolate accents, framed by firm, grainy, ripe tannins and wonderful freshness on the finish. 124 cases were made.

The 2014 Syrah Garys' Vineyard is another top notch Syrah from this team. Offering lots of spicy red and black fruits, tons of minerality, full-bodied richness and building tannic structure, it has terrific mid-palate density, the classic rocky earth character that's the hallmark of this site and a big finish. It's still a little rough around the edges, but it will be better with 2-3 years of cellaring and have 10-15 years of overall longevity. It's a serious, outstanding Syrah well worth seeking out.

Another serious, massively fruited, decadent and layered Syrah, the 2013 Syrah Garys' Vineyard sports an inky, opaque color to go with incredibly young, unevolved notes of black and blue fruits, asphalt, big minerality, lead pencil and charcoal. Big, structured, meaty, and concentrated with a full-bodied, massive profile on the palate, it needs short term cellaring but will have 15 years or more of longevity.

Fermented all in upright oak tanks, the 2012 Syrah Garys’ Vineyard is another surprisingly structured, tannic effort that will benefit from short-term cellaring. Black fruits, coffee bean, smoke and knockout minerality all emerge from this beauty, and it has full-bodied richness and depth, big texture and a terrific finish.

Slightly more firm and angular (which is common for this vineyard), the 2011 Syrah Garys’ Vineyard (100% Syrah, 50% whole cluster), which was harvest early in November, exhibits classic Garys’ notes of coffee bean, black fruits, green olives and wild herbs on the nose and palate. Medium to full-bodied, rich and textured, it should benefit from another year of bottle age and drink nicely for upwards of a decade. Drink 2014-2021. This estate is managed by the Pisoni Family, and high quality and realistic prices are the name of the game here. Year in, year out, these wines over-deliver.
