The expressive nose of the medium to dark ruby-colored 2000 Aloxe-Corton Les Valozieres reveals sweet blackberries and metal shavings. It broadens on the palate to display an expansive, medium-bodied personality filled with candied, jammy dark fruits. While this seductive wine has excellent depth, readers should note that its is meant for early drinking. Projected maturity: now-2006.
Lucien Le Moine’s 2000 reds have more flesh and texture than the majority of the wines from this vintage. While a few were too tight and tannic to recommend, the finest appear to be loaded with baby fat. This means they are delicious to drink in the near term, but may reveal leaner structures with cellaring.
Concerning the 2000 reds, Saouma stated that it was a “very difficult vintage” in the Cote de Beaune. To achieve success in 2000 with reds, it was important to work the lees without adding sulfur and perform a long elevage.”
