Trebbiano is generally a versatile, workhorse grape that can pair with a long list of typical Abruzzese cheeses and cold cuts. This particular 2015 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Altare from Marramiero is redolent of stone and orchard fruit with apricot, pear and Golden Delicious apple. There is some spice, saffron and light shadings of nutmeg too. What makes it special is the brilliant sunshine you find locked deep within this fruit, which is fermented in oak and then aged in barrique for 18 months. Some 11,300 bottles were made.

A rich, oaked version, laced with toasted coconut, vanilla, hay and smoke accents. The oak holds sway over the apple puree, petrol, mineral and baked peach notes for now, but the flavors remain integrated overall and should knit together with short-term cellaring or when paired with baked or grilled fish. Although this is an older vintage, I wanted to call out the delightful 2010 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Altare. I enjoyed the brightness and fresh energy of this wine and its compelling notes of yellow fruit, crushed mineral and grilled herb. In the mouth, this Trebbiano presents a creamy rich texture. The wine should hold up nicely for the next 24 months.
