The 2008 Symmetria is a blend of Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet and Trincadeira, aged in used oak for 6 months. This wine has a steely nuance, crispness and a considerable hit of tannins on the finish. With air, it developed a hint of a meaty note, too. With the right food matchup, it will hit the spot. Ninety minutes of air really brought out the power and class in this wine, as it evolved dramatically from its early presentation. If you’re looking for an easygoing, stereotypical wine with sweet fruit and soft everything, this is probably not what you want, but it should evolve and become more harmonious rather quickly. At the moment, it seems pretty serious, earthy and complex. It showed beautifully and it is easily the best pick in the lineup considering both price and quality. Drink now-2018. Winemaker Paulo Laureano is no stranger to these reports, of course, but these wines are the first of these brands reviewed. Tasting through them in the USA, I found them overall to be very well done, the one caveat being the pricing on the upper level wines. At the other extreme, the entry level Branco is a nice deal.Importer: The Artisan Collection, New York, NY; tel. (212) 608-0722.
