Coming from 117 year old vines planted in 1892, Richard Hamilton’s 2009 Centurion Shiraz has a very deep garnet-purple color and complex aromas of warm blackberries and cassis over brine, iron ore, cedar, freshly tilled humus, dried leaves, marmite on toast and smoked game. Full bodied and very concentrated in the mouth, it offers firm, finely grained tannins and a very long still very primary finish. Approachable now, it should cellar to 2020+. The purple-colored 2006 Centurion Shiraz was aged for 19 months in 40% new French oak. Notes of cigar box, baking spices, earth notes, blueberry compote, and blackberry jump from the glass, leading to an elegantly styled Shiraz with layers of savory fruit, good balance, and a pure finish. The 2005 Shiraz Reserve Centurion reveals the most potential here. From a vineyard planted in 1892, it was aged in 100% new French and American oak. A deep opaque purple color is accompanied by a projected nose of blackberries, cassis, tar, and damp earth.
