The 1984 and 1985 Park Muscatine Zinfandels are two of the most profound Zinfandels I have ever tasted. Both have incredible perfumes of sweet berry fruit, smoky oak, and exotic spices. Both are fabulously concentrated, full-bodied, and explosively long. The 1985 reveals more noticeable tannin and slightly higher acidity; the 1984 appears to be more opulent. By any standard of measurement, these are memorable wines that should continue to drink well for 7-10 more years.
With the exception of some of Ridge's massive late harvest Zinfandels of the early seventies, I have generally believed their Zins are at their best when drunk within their first 7-10 years of life.
The two Park Muscatine Zinfandels, once available only through Ridge's "Advanced Tasting Program," are no longer being produced. The vineyard was sold to Randy Dunn, who intends to tear out the ancient vines of Zinfandel and replant with Cabernet!
