The 2020 Chardonnay Bentrock is singular and expressive this vintage. It offers the matchstick-like reduction associated with Burgundian Chardonnay and takes significant time to reveal a core of candied lemon. The full-bodied palate is satiny and layered, its full, toasty fruits streaked with exotic honey and ginger perfume from a touch of botrytis in the vineyard. It has great freshness, a tremendously long finish and is the best rendition of this cuvée I've tasted to date.

The 2019 Chardonnay Bentrock has layered scents of white peaches, honey and chamomile with streaks of flint and singular herbal notes. The palate is satiny and expansive, with detailed flavors and integrated flinty mineral character. It has bright, seamless acidity and crystalline expression, finishing long and energetic.

The 2018 Chardonnay Bentrock is scented of poached pears, baker's yeast and elderflower with bright touches of saline. The medium-bodied palate is super silky, bright and mineral-driven but hints at more savory nuance yet to come, and it finishes long and uplifted. 81 cases were made.

The 2017 Chardonnay Bentrock opens with a touch of gunflint and smoke, giving way to acacia, red apple skin, warm hay, pie crust and quince with white peach and crushed stone plus a creamy yogurt note. Light to medium-bodied, it has a good core of savory fruit with tangy acidity and a long, lively and textured finish. 164 cases were made.

The 2015 Chardonnay Bentrock wafts from the glass with a beautifully complex bouquet of macadamia nuts, wheat toast, lemon oil and preserved lemon, framed by a touch of smoky reduction. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, with a glossily textural attack, a bright spine of acidity and immense levels of concentration and intensity. The long, tongue-tingling finish is simultaneously saline and chalky. In 2015, this is my favorite of the Sandhi Chardonnays.
