The 2018 Pelago in an IGT blend of 45% Montepulciano, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot from vineyards near Osimo in the Marche region on Italy's Adriatic Coast. This is a second, albeit more contemporary red wine from the top of the estate portfolio. The wine shows saturated dark fruit with plum, soft spice, leather and tar. There are hints of chopped mint and balsam herb on the elegant finish.

This wine is now celebrating its 22nd harvest. The Umani Ronchi 2016 Pelago is a blend of Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot aged in French oak for 14 months. This is a wine with a deep core of dark fruit and a lot of stuffing that adds textural fiber and richness. Pelago shows a downright contemporary style that is expressed in terms of volume, softness and phenolic weight (or sheer grape concentration). This is a super Marche wine from start to finish, with black cherry, blackberry, soft spice, leather and tar. The 2016 vintage is especially rich and important. When you're ready to open it, sample it with wedges of an aged goat-milk caciotta.

The Umani Ronchi 2014 Pelago is a blend of 50% Montepulciano, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, and the first year of production of this local favorite was 1994. In fact, this bottling celebrates the wine's 20th anniversary. There is plenty of power and richness here despite the rather weaker and cooler vintage. The wine's fiber is dense and generous, and the bouquet is similarly loaded with dark fruit, smoke, tar and tobacco. It's another great steak wine from Umani Ronchi. Some 9,800 bottles, 180 magnums and 20 Jeroboams were produced.

The 2009 Pelago is a beautiful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Montepulciano and Merlot. The wine opens to a dark and impenetrable appearance with thick aromatic layers that peel off slowly. The wine's bouquet is shaped by powerful aromas of blackberry, plum, spice, leather and grilled herb. The mouthfeel is super supple and silky with good structure at the back.

The 2008 Marche Rosso Pelago is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Montepulciano and 10% Merlot. Gracious and polished, the Pelago flows across the palate with black fruit, smoke, tar, incense and licorice. All the elements are beautifully balanced from start to finish. The 2008 boasts gorgeous inner sweetness and perfume to match its suave, caressing personality.
