From 80- to 90-year-old vines picked at 76° Oechsle, the 2022 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett offers a clear, pure and fresh, coolish and flinty bouquet of crushed stones and bright, ripe fruits. Round and with ripe, crystalline acidity, this is a charmingly aromatic Himmelreich Kabinett with stunningly crisp and vivacious, mineral acidity on the finish. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. From the original "Himmelreich" as well as the "Braunes" relatively far up the steep slope and from 80- to 90-year-old vines comes Richter's 2020 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett. Some of the grapes were picked early, but a third were picked about three weeks later. The wine was aged two-thirds in steel and one-third in cask and comes across as a round and juicy as well as racy-piquant and persistently salty Kabinett with precision and laser-like acidity. The nose is pure, exact and flinty like an Eiswein (yet not that ripe and concentrated) and lean and mineral on the grippy finish, yet it has juicy fruit, which indicates impressive aging potential. 8% stated alcohol. The 2019 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett is very clear, precise and intense on the refined but complex, deep and concentrated nose. Sourced from 70- to 80-year-old vines in the original Himmelreich ("Im Himmelreich"), this is a dense, complex and structured Kabinett with mouth-filling fruit and a long, complex, very mineral and expressive finish. This is a great Kabinett—one of the best you can find in the Mosel (or elsewhere)—and this will be even more true in 20, 30 or even 40 years. Terroir matters, and the old vines in a first-class terroir matter even more. This is another must-buy. 9% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.
