The 2014 Syrah from Zaca Mesa opens in the glass with notions of smoky blackberries and a touch of light reduction. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with a supple attack, juicy mid-palate and a firm, compact finish.

Notes of black raspberries, plums, spice box and saddle leather all emerge from the 2013 Syrah, which was mostly destemmed and spent 16 months in 20% new French oak. Drink this medium-bodied, well priced and enjoyable Syrah over the coming couple of years.

The 2011 Syrah incorporates a tiny splash of Viognier and spent 16 months in 18% new French oak. Its vibrant purple color is followed by classic Syrah characteristics of savory herbs, graphite, dried pepper and darker fruits. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, ripe and with some chewy tannin, it still shines for its pretty, pure fruit and solid overall balance. It's a good value, has lots to like, and is well worth checking out.

The 2008 Syrah emerges from the glass with blackberry jam, spices and chocolate. This is a fairly big, plump style of Syrah with limited finesse and complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014.
