Niellon is one of my favorite producers. While I have the same reservations about his white burgundies as I do about those of Coche-Dury (they are usually short-lived), there is no danger in keeping Niellon's 1986 Batard-Montrachet for another 7-8 years. A flamboyant, gutsy wine, it possesses a huge nose of tropical fruits, coconut, butter, oranges, and baked apples. It is loaded with glycerin, admirably full-bodied, lavishly rich and unctuous, with a long, lusty, heady finish. Absolutely gorgeous now, it is hard to believe this wine can get any better.
