The 2007 Pecchia, Sangiovese from the estate’s finest plot, saturates the palate with masses of dark fruit, smoke, tobacco, licorice and incense. It is a wild, exotic wine loaded with character and personality. The dark, seamless fruit follows through to a long, exceptionally pure finish. This is another gorgeous wine from Gagliole. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. Gagliole is one of the most stunningly beautiful properties in Tuscany, a region not exactly lacking in picture-perfect scenery. The terraced, old-vine plots are truly a sight to behold. The winery itself is fairly stripped down, with the exception of recently purchased sorting tables that are much rarer in Tuscany than readers might think. Most producers would probably be thrilled with wines like these. Still, it seems fairly obvious that the potential of what is possible here has only been scratched. Maybe I am being too hard on Gagliole, but the bar must be set higher for those to whom nature has given so much. The bottom line is, are these the very best wines that can be made here? This displays smoke, berry and cherry aromas and flavors, with loads of new oak in the aftertaste, but the charred barrel and light oak really complements the Sangiovese. A single-vineyard wine from Gagliole. Not imported into the U.S. Best after 2011. 95 cases made. -JS
