The 2009 Vico is 100% Mencia sourced from 75- to 80-year-old vines from the DO of Bierzo. It was fermented with 30% whole clusters and aged for 9 months in 2-year-old French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up an earthy minerality, Asian spices, incense, black cherry, and black raspberry aromas. Medium-bodied, savory, concentrated, and elegant, this nicely proportioned red is likely to evolve for 1-2 years and drink well for another 8-10 years. It is a relatively affordable example of first class Mencia that provides a good look at the Raul Perez style.
Bodegas y Vinedos Raul Perez is the hangout of Spain’s most visionary vigneron, Raul Perez. These latest releases only reinforce the legend.
