A blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2001 Merlot Grand Estates (310,000 cases) is an excellent value. Aged for 14 months in one- to three year-old oak barrels (60% French, 40% American), it reveals a red fruit-dominated nose. Cherries, raspberries, and some cassis can be detected in its generous character. Lush, with good depth of fruit, this medium-bodied wine is a candidate for drinking over the next 3 years.
