Among the Chateauneuf du Pape offerings there are three levels, with Les Olivets being the easiest and most accessible wine, and the Cuvee Reservee and Cuvee Prestige taking extract and concentration, as well as ageworthiness to more profound levels. Undoubtedly, the finest cuvee produced by Roger Sabon is the Cuvee Prestige, made from the vineyard's oldest vines (80-100 years old). The dark garnet-colored 1994 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige possesses a powerful fragrance of olives, cedar, red and black fruits, spice, and pepper. Heady, thick, and full-bodied, with layers of flavor, this beautifully made, rich, complex Chateauneuf du Pape can be drunk now as well as over the next 12-15+ years. This is an impressive wine from one of the leading producer/estates of Chateauneuf du Pape.
This wine was tasted between June 1 and June 16, 1996.
Roger Sabon, the former mayor of Chateauneuf du Pape, continues to turn out very well made wines. Several years ago he stopped filtering, and guess what? Sabon claims he is thrilled with how much more complexity and character his wines exhibit by the simple elimination of this damaging practice.
