The top effort, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Cadiac, is a stunning wine even though it leans toward a quasi-modern style. The fruit comes from two vineyards in the northeastern sector of the appellation called Coudoulet and Chaupoin. A brilliant, dense ruby/purple-colored offering, it reveals some evidence of toasty oak, but the wine is dominated by kirsch, black currant, lavender, and licorice characteristics. Full-bodied, rich, and pure with good acids and sweet, velvety tannins, it should drink well for 15+ years.
No 2008 Berthet-Rayne offerings were presented for tasting, but this 37-acre estate produced its finest wines to date in 2007.
