The 2003 Barolo Vigneto Monvigliero is all about the bouquet, which is dominated by suggestions of sweet, medicinal herbs that recall Barolo chinato. In the glass the wine reveals a pretty core of sweet red fruit, although the balance remains defined by its high-toned aromatics. Though a pretty wine, this is not an especially easy style to understand. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015.
This historic estate is based in Verduno, one of the lesser-known villages in the Barolo district. The Burotto Barolos are very quirky, fragrant wines with a level of herbaceousness that frankly I find quite distracting. Other tasters may feel differently, but these Barolos occupy an extreme position vis-a-vis the vast majority of wines being made today.
