The 2008 Barolo Vigneto Monvigliero hits the palate with a burst of sweet red berries, herbs and fresh flowers. The 2008 shows excellent weight and palate presence, but the intense high-toned, herbal notes that are the result of 100% whole-cluster fermentation dominate the wine’s balance. Diehard Burlotto fans will probably flock to the Monvigliero, but in my view 2008 was a very tricky vintage for whole-cluster fermentation. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.
This is another strong set of wines from Burlotto. Over the last few years the winery seems to have made a major jump in quality. The traditional style here remains a bit quirky but readers who are willing to take some time to explore these Baroli will be amply rewarded.
