The 2006 Syrah Reserve Release was made with 50% whole bunches. It is purple-colored with an attractive nose of mineral, bacon, game, and blueberry. Firm and structured on the palate, it is a finesse-styled, racy Syrah owing more to the northern Rhone than South Australia. Impeccably balanced and lingering in the finish, it will blossom for several more years and drink well from 2011 to 2021. De Bortoli produces a substantial amount of wine (it has four winemaking facilities) but under the leadership of manager/winemaker Stephen Webber this has not been a deterrent to high quality. Eight value wines were reviewed in Issue 178 and merit serious interest.
