A winner, the 2010 Cotes du Rhone Viognier was fashioned from 10 to 60-year old Viognier vines cropped at a remarkably low 20 hectoliters per hectare. Explosive aromas of dried apricots, white peach and honeysuckle soar from the glass of this medium-bodied, crisp, dry, refreshing, authentic Viognier. It is difficult to believe that anyone can produce such good Viognier (a somewhat tricky varietal) at this price. Consume it over the next 1-2 years. I tasted three early release 2010 red wines (which appears to be another terrific vintage in the southern Rhone). All three exhibits lots of color, extract and richness as well as fresh acids and sweet tannin. Moreover, they appear to be more ageworthy than the early maturing, but seductive 2009s.Importer: Peter Weygandt, Weygandt-Metzler, Unionville, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800
