Comprised mostly of Grenache, with 20% of Syrah, the 2012 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes is a big, rich, full-bodied effort that gives up classic Rasteau aromas and flavors of dark berry fruit, mineral, leather, chocolate and dusty soil. There’s a fair kick of tannin here, so don’t be afraid to give it a year or two in the cellar. It should drink well for upward of a decade or more.
Proprietor Michel Tardieu fashions a bevy of smoking southern Rhones, most of which end up being great values.
