As I have stated on the cover page of this journal for nearly twenty years, both the numerical rating and written review are essentially the equivalent of photograph of a runner in a marathon. In the case of Domaine de Pouy (my nomination for one of the most delicious dry whites for under $6 a bottle), the numerical rating is legitimate - for about 4-5 months! Readers who have not consumed their stocks of Domaine de Pouy by the end of this year will likely find the wine has already begun to drop its fruit, and merit a score in the mid-seventies. Perhaps wines such as this should have a "drink by" date on them. Over the next four months, readers can look forward to an exuberantly fresh, lemony, citrusy, surprisingly aromatic wine that has been tank-fermented, and bottled quickly with some CO2 to preserve its freshness. The light-bodied, tasty 1996 is oozing with fruit, and reveals a creamier texture than previous vintages. To reiterate, drink this humbly-priced fruit-bomb over the next 4-5 months. Great value.Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. (202) 832-9083
