Tasted Only OnceThe first comment in my notes on the 1929 was "cedar city." Although lightly-colored, with a rusty tint to the entire wine, the 1929 Ausone exhibits a fabulous bouquet of spices, cedar, and sweet, jammy fruit. It displays wonderful ripeness, as well as the telltale austerity and dry finish that often characterize Ausone. The wine remains rich, medium-bodied, and intact, but I would not gamble on holding it any longer. However, it possesses more fruit, richness, and complexity than the shallow color suggests.
