The impressive 1995 Rosso di Montalcino is fashioned from 100% Sangiovese Grosso, and bottled after seven months of aging in Slavonian barrels. It possesses an outstanding nose of super-ripe wild blueberry and cherry scents. Not complex, the wine is pure, with a fruit-driven personality, medium to full body, and luscious quantities of jammy fruit balanced by velvety tannin. It should continue to drink well for 5-6 years. It provides a glimpse of the outstanding raw materials that I suspect will be found in its bigger sibling, the unreleased Brunello di Montalcino. One of the finer producers of Brunello di Montalcino, Altesino has had an impeccable track record of producing high quality wine since their first vintage in the early seventies. The current releases are all noteworthy.A Leonardo Lo Cascio Selection, Winebow, Hohokus, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620
