The problem with the 1989 Gigondas from the Domaine de la Mavette is that once past the herbal, peppery, spicy nose, there are short, malnourished, soft flavors that lack grip and concentration. Drink it up. Last tasted 11/94.
This estate has impressive hillside vineyard sites in addition to very old vines, so the potential for brilliant wines is obvious. To date, the wine has been an old-style, slightly oxidized Gigondas that is heavy and forceful. The 1995s may be a sign that more freshness and an earlier bottling are making some inroads at this property.
