The 2002 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra at 15 years after the vintage was a true revelation, with a fully developed, ripe nose with aromas of forest floor. It fermented in an oak vat, and they have always continued like that, since before they built their own winery in Cebreros in 2005. At that time they were still purchasing vineyards, initially only on the slate/laminar soils and later on granite. They have always used a very simple vinification and élevage, and what comes through is the character of the soils, with a strong iron-like component, reminiscent of rusty nail, tea leaves, tobacco and morels. The palate is sleek and polished, with fully resolved tannins and some dusty rusticity, like a wine from another era, that in a way made me think of a wine from Douro in Portugal. This is fully mature yet seems to be able to continue for a few more years in bottle. It surely proves the aging potential of the wine from this old-vines.
