This well-made effort from the increasingly fashionable, cool climate appellation of Bierzo is produced from the indigenous Mencia varietal. Sadly, the brilliant 2001 Seleccion Familiar, fashioned from 60-70-year old vines, is limited in availability. It is reminiscent of a Spanish version of a grand cru Burgundy, such as Musigny, with more raspberry and crushed rock characteristics. Undeniable minerality and elegance, a wonderful texture, medium body, and a pure, well-poised palate impression emerge from this deep ruby/purple-tinged 2001. It delivers considerable flavor yet comes across as light and delicate. Enjoy it over the next 5-6 years.
