The 2015 Cuvée Karatas Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, the latter from a parcel of Semillon planted in the 1880s in the Monte Rosso Vineyard. Morgan Peterson says it is “one-of-a-kind stuff” and there is no reason to doubt him. This is more of an over-the-top flamboyant, rather amazing wine with notes of orange marmalade, honeydew melon, jam, quince, white currants and flowers. There was an almost unctuous quality to the texture and super-concentration from these two varieties. Most of this is from dry-farmed vineyards and the honeyed, low-yields that were present in 2015 are translated into this wonderfully fresh, incredible wine that almost behaves like one of the great Ygrecs from Chateau d’Yquem. Drink it over the next 5-7 years, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it last longer.
