This producer's reputation for high quality wine is well-deserved. The 1990 Rioja Reserva has just been bottled. Largely because of that, it appears more structured, less forthcoming, and more difficult to fully assess than the 1989. The impressive dark ruby/purple color is followed by a reticent bouquet. With coaxing, the wine displays hints of jammy blackcurrants, smoky new oak, and new saddle leather. There is lovely sweetness from ripe fruit, full body, and considerable tannin, the latter component revealing some toughness in the finish. Cellaring of 1-2 years is clearly required. Given the wine's concentration, it is a candidate for 10+ years of aging. At present, the 1989 is far more flattering and open knit than the 1990.Importer: Jorge Ordonez 39 Constance Road, West Roxbury, MA 02132; telephone (617) 327-1613; telefax (617) 323-0455.
