The 2010 Laya is a blend of 70% Garnacha and 30% Monastrell grown on sandy, calcareous soils between 700 and 1,000 meters that sees four months in French oak. It has an earthy nose tinged with dark chocolate, and it takes time to unfurl in the glass, finally offering attractive bell pepper notes with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp acidity. It is compact at first with a touch of hardness toward the finish, although it softens nicely in the glass. A decent enough Almansa, though I was seeking a little more charm.
