The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a big wine loaded with dark cherries, menthol, leather, minerals, earthiness, licorice and spices. The wine has plenty of structure; the only question is whether there is enough inner sweetness and density to stand up to the wine’s tannins. Today, that remains an open question, but for the time being, this Riserva offers terrific balance in a hearty, powerful style. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018.
