The 1989 Barolo Castellero possesses such an over-ripe, cherry jam, old vine character that the intensity of the bouquet reminds me of the great Pomerol, Lafleur. Once past the bouquet, it does not exhibit the intensity of Lafleur, but it does offer medium to full-bodied, supple flavor with admirable purity of black-cherry fruit. The sweetness is a result of ripeness, not residual sugar. With a moderately long, round, supple finish, this seductive Barolo should be consumed over the next decade. No known American importer.
