The 2008 Vespa Bianco impresses for its textural finesse, depth and richness. Light floral honey, juicy apricots, mint and cantaloupe meld together seamlessly in this lush yet mid-weight, beautifully precise Vespa Bianco. The wine turns pointed and more delicate on the sublime, understated finish. The 2008 is the first vintage to be aged exclusively in cask, a decision that has paid off quite handsomely. Vespa Bianco is 45% Chardonnay, 45% Sauvignon and 10% Picolit. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018.
Never one to keep still for long, proprietor Joe Bastianich has a new set of wines this year in his Adriatico line. These entry-level whites are meant to showcase indigenous varieties as seen through a unified terroir that happens to be spread across three countries; Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. Only the Ribolla Gialla, bottled by Slovenian grower Marjan Simcic appears to still be a work in progress.
