The 2001 Terra di Covignano offers plenty of competition to the better Sangiovese-based wines of the region. A full, blackish ruby with a powerful, smoky wild cherry and red currant nose, its substantial flavors, lush but decisive tannins, and sweet, lingering finish are the hallmarks of first-rate grapes and winemaking, both under the control of Fabrizio Moltard. Drink: 2005-2015. An estate to watch, particularly considering that the vineyards are mostly still quite young.
