The 2000 Pinot Noir Melville Vineyard is a compelling example. The wine is from a new vineyard planted with Dijon clones #114 and #115. This wine gave me a sense of deja vu of when I first tasted the 1990 Domaine de la Romanee Conti La Tache. An incredibly complex nose of flowers, red and black fruits, earth, and prunes is followed by a full-bodied, fabulously concentrated wine that is extremely light on its feet. It possesses terrific definition, refreshing underlying acidity, and a staggeringly long finish, this outrageously complex, rich Pinot Noir should drink well for a decade. Remarkably, it is made from young vines. This is a wine of two up and coming California superstars. Don't miss it. The talented Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton have admirably exploited the extraordinary potential that exists in selected micro-climates in Santa Barbara county. In a few short years, this young, energetic twosome have astonished this critic with the breadth and complexity of their wines. Their 2000 Pinot Noirs are among the finest New World Pinots I have ever tasted. Sadly, the production is small, averaging 100-200 cases of each cuvee.Tel. (805) 452-5609
