Haag’s 2005 Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Spatlese trocken – weighing in at 12.5% alcohol, a half percent less than a dry “Kabinett” that displayed a touch of warmth – smells of apple, lime, and licorice, comes to the palate very rich and ripe but suffused with herbs, nut oils, and wet stone slate character, and finishes with generously juicy, clear apple tinged with apple pip and wet stone. This satisfying dry Riesling, soft yet fresh-fruited and mineral, comes from a parcel of old vines the Haags were just able to acquire.
