The 1992 Chardonnay from the Sanford and Benedict Vineyard has not yet been released. Readers will find it to be a compelling example of its type. Although not as fleshy and powerful as the 1991 Barrel Select, it is persuasively rich and full-bodied, with a multilayered personality, a subtle use of toasty new oak, and gobs of flavor all buttressed by excellent acidity. It may actually improve over the next 2-3 years. As the scores attest, Sanford is one of California's most fashionable wineries. Consumers are demanding more flavor and complexity, and Sanford's wines deliver the goods. While these wines may be criticized for lacking subtlety, they are exciting wines that can dazzle the palate. Long known for its brilliant, dramatic, oaky Chardonnays, lovers of that lusty, no-holds-barred style of Chardonnay will be thrilled with Sanford's current releases.
