Always a serious red, and more so in a cold and rainy vintage like 2008, the 2008 Sot Lefriec shows a little closed. Time in bottle has done it good, as it seems to be a true vin de garde. Each vintage they start from scratch trying to produce the best possible red from their vines in Lavern in Penedès, vineyards that are farmed following the cycles of the moon, with all work done manually, including green harvest. It combines power and rusticity with elegance, and in 2008 it's a blend of 50% Merlot, 30% Cari?ena and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon that fermented destemmed for some two to three weeks after a ten-day cold soak. After pressing it with a vertical press, the wine is put through malolactic in oak barrels where it aged for 14-16 months. It's serious and balanced, and this is a slightly fresher vintage with enough power to stand up to powerful food, but it feels a lot younger than it is. It has a grainy texture with dusty tannins, with good freshness, perhaps less powerful than other vintages of Sot Lefriec. This seems to be a wine for ten years after the vintage. It has a long life ahead. 1,300 bottles and 30 magnums were bottled in April 2011.
